DSc Adrian J. Riquelme Guill, with a Ph.D. from the University of Alicante and training in Civil Engineering, and Geological Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, currently holds the position of Senior Lecturer in the Geotechnical Engineering field at the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Alicante. His research is centered around the Geotechnical Engineering and Structures Research Group (INTERES), and he collaborates with the Geohazards InSAR Laboratory and Modelling Group at IGME. Actively participating in working groups, he is involved in geomechanical classifications within SEMR and the Suggested Methods working group of the ISRM Upgraded SM for Discontinuity Characterization.
His primary research interest lies in the application of remotely sensed information for the geomechanical characterization of rock masses. His work encompasses the monitoring of slope movements, land subsidence, and infrastructure using SAR interferometry, as well as the characterization and monitoring of rock masses using 3D point clouds. Additionally, he engages in geomechanical classifications of rock masses and the characterization of the rock matrix. He is the author of the open-source software Discontinuity Set Extractor, utilized by companies for geotechnical calculations and in universities across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
Dr. Ping Zhang is a Professor in the Division of Mining and Geotechnical Engineering at Luleå University of Technology (LTU), Sweden. He obtained his PhD in Rock Mechancis from Xi’an University of Technology, Xi’an, China. He has over 20 years of experience in research, education, and industry in rock mechanics and geotechnical engineering. Before joining LTU in 2010, he held various positions in State Key Laboratory of Frozen Soil Engineering, Xi’an University of Technology, Hunan University and Central South University in China, focusing on tunneling and slope stability.
After joining LTU, Dr. Zhang has led research projects funded by the EU, Vinnova, Formas, Tillväktverket etc., in collaboration with Swedish mining companies such as LKAB, Boliden, and Zinkgruvan Mining. His expertise includes rock failure processes under dynamic loading, deformation monitoring of rock tunnels and caverns, ground support monitoring and design, rockburst mitigation, numerical analysis, and large rock cavern design for hydrogen storage. He has over 80 scientific publications and served as a specialist at LKAB (2020–2021).
